Why Visit Phuket?

Phuket offers a unique blend of natural beauty, culture, and relaxing resorts. From pristine beaches with warm turquoise waters to bustling street markets and serene temples, the island is a dream destination for globetrotters. With a warm tropical climate, affordable luxury accommodations, and activities for all ages, it’s no wonder Phuket is one of Southeast Asia’s top travel spots.

Best Time to Visit Phuket

  • High Season (November to February): Enjoy sunny weather and calm seas—perfect for beach lovers and outdoor activities.

  • Shoulder Season (March to May): Warm temperatures with fewer crowds, ideal for exploring the island's cultural attractions.

  • Low Season (June to October): Expect occasional rain, but this is the best time for budget travelers seeking deals on accommodations and tours.

Getting to Phuket

Traveling from the U.S. to Thailand can be a challenge since it is on the other side of the globe and there are currently no direct flights (though Thai Airways is expected to resume non-stop routes soon). With a bit of planning, you can turn your long-haul journey into an opportunity to explore an additional destination.

Pro Tip - if you are flying in to Phuket from the South then you will want to sit on the right hand side of the plane as you will be flying over all of the neighboing islands like Ko Phi Phi. If you are flying from the North you will want to sit on the left and you'll be able to see Phang Na Bay as you descend in to Phuket International Airport.

Maximize Your Trip with a Free Stopover

Instead of settling for a short layover, consider airlines that allow free or extended stopovers in their hub cities. For example, instead of a quick two-hour stop in Singapore, why not spend a few days exploring the city? It’s a fantastic way to experience two destinations for the price of one ticket.

Recommended Airlines for U.S. to Thailand Flights

  1. Singapore Airlines

    • Known for its award-winning service, Singapore Airlines consistently ranks among the top three airlines in the world. From Economy to First Class, their exceptional staff and onboard amenities make the journey enjoyable.

    • Stopover Highlight: Singapore is a vibrant, modern city packed with attractions you can explore in just 24-48 hours. Don’t miss the Jewel Changi Airport, Gardens by the Bay, and the iconic Marina Bay Sands.

  2. Gulf Carriers

    • Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Etihad Airways are some of the best in the world, offering premium cabins that redefine luxury travel. Supported by their wealthy home countries, these airlines excel in Business and First Class.

    • Recommendation: Emirates stands out for its impressive service and Dubai’s appeal as a stopover destination. Dubai offers iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa, Palm Jumeirah, and sprawling shopping malls.

    • While Doha (Qatar) and Abu Dhabi (Etihad) also offer stopovers, Dubai’s attractions make it a top choice for travelers.

  3. Flying within Thailand

    • Flying within Thailand and some of its neighboring Asian cities is very easy and affordable. Air Asia is a cheap no thrills airline where you can find 2 hour flights for less than $50 per person!

Pro Tips for Flying to Thailand

  • Book Early: Flights to Thailand can fill up quickly, especially during peak travel seasons.

  • Check Stopover Policies: Many airlines offer free or discounted stopover packages, including accommodations and tours. Not only are you getting to visit a second country but you can potentially even get free accommodations and activities included!

  • Consider the Experience: If comfort matters, prioritize airlines with premium cabin options or excellent Economy service for long-haul flights.

  • Book with Points: Singapore and Qatar are some of the best airlines in the world and you can book flights for free with points! You can easily transfer points from many major credit card programs like AMEX or Chase to help you score one of the best seats in the sky.

By choosing the right airline and leveraging stopovers, you can transform your trip to Thailand into a multi-destination adventure!

Top Attractions in Phuket

  1. Patong Beach - The most famous part of Phuket is Patong Beach. Located on the western side of the island, this city is known for its vibrant nightlife, this beach destination is a haven for party-goers and water sports enthusiasts.

While it’s renowned for its bustling party scene and affordable accommodations, Patong also boasts some world-class luxury resorts, such as the iconic Amanpuri (the first Aman property), Rosewood Phuket (part of the Rosewood Luxury Brand) and Keemala (part of the Hilton Portfolio). You can stay at a luxury resort away from the crowds while still being close to Bangla Road, the heart of Patong’s nightlife, where the markets, energetic clubs, and entertainment options come alive after sunset.

  1. Old Phuket Town - Discover the cultural heart of Phuket on the island’s southeast side where you will find beautiful architecture, colorful shophouses, and charming cafes. Old Town Phuket is located about an hour from the lively Patong Beach. This area offers a more tranquil and authentic experience.

The southeast is also the perfect base for exploring the surrounding islands. With easy access to major ferries and boat tours, you can embark on snorkeling trips or day excursions to iconic destinations like the Phi Phi Islands, Krabi, and more. If you’re planning water adventures, consider staying in Cape Panwa, just 20 minutes from Old Phuket Town. Luxury resorts like Sri Panwa and V Villas provide exceptional accommodations in this serene area.

For a memorable experience, visit the vibrant night markets, where you can stroll through bustling streets and enjoy local delicacies. Alternatively, take a morning walk to explore quaint cafes and boutique shops. Don’t miss dining at the Blue Elephant, renowned for its Michelin-starred meals and some of the finest Thai cuisine in town.

  1. Big Buddha - Standing 45 meters tall, the Big Buddha offers panoramic views of the island. This iconic landmark is a must-visit for its serene atmosphere and cultural significance.

  1. Phang Nga Bay - Famous for its limestone karsts and emerald waters, this bay is perfect for a boat tour. Don’t miss James Bond Island and Koh Panyee, a floating village.

  1. Phi Phi Islands - A short boat ride from Phuket, these islands are renowned for their crystal-clear waters, vibrant marine life, and stunning beaches like Maya Bay. [Check out full travel guide to visitng the Phi Phi Islands]

Where to Stay in Phuket

  • Luxury Resorts near Patong Beach

    • Amanpuri: the first of the Aman Properties and a luxury resort brand second to none. The property and rooms are more traditional vs modern luxury.

    • Rosewood Phuket: A top tier luxury brand with modern aesthetics.

    • Trisara: Ultimate luxury with private pools and beachfront access.

  • Luxury Resorts in Cape Panwa

aerial view looking down at a boutique hotel with private plunge pools and individual villas overlooking the beautiful beach and ocean with boats

  • Luxury Resorts bookable with Points

    • Keemala: now part of the Hilton portfolio, this quiet and eco chic boutique property is just a short drive from Patong Beach

    • JW Marriott: there are two JW Marriotts one near Patong Beach and the other further north which will feel a little more isolated from the rest of Phuket.

As a points enthusiast, I was looking at Keemala and the JW but I wasn’t sold on the properties. Keemala seemed like it would be too small and the JW was a little older and would be a little louder and more of a traditional large resort.

Both Sri Panwa and V Villas were great properties providing a quiet and relaxing setting with top tier service. I would recommend either of those when booking a trip to Phuke.

Things to Do in Phuket

  1. Island Hopping - Explore nearby islands like Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay, Similan Islands, and Coral Island for snorkeling, diving, or simply relaxing on pristine beaches.

  2. Temple Hopping - Visit Phuket’s spiritual sites, including Wat Chalong and the Big Buddha, to experience authentic Thai culture and Buddhism.

  3. Night Markets - Shop for souvenirs, taste street food, and enjoy live entertainment at markets like the Phuket Weekend Market  at Old Town Phuket or Patong Beach

  4. Spa and Wellness - Indulge in a traditional Thai massage or a luxurious spa treatment at top resorts or local wellness centers. Massage treatments in Thailand will easily be some of the best and much cheaper than services you will find in the US or at other luxury resorts around the world

What to Eat in Phuket

  1. Pad Thai: Thailand's iconic stir-fried noodle dish. The King Prawn Pad Thai was my favorite and the Prawns were nearly the size of a football!

  2. Tom Yum Goong: Spicy and flavorful Thai soup. It is very hot and humid in Thailand so this isn’t something you will want to get on a day of walking around outside

  3. Curry: There are many rich and flavorful coconut milk curry dishes that are a must

  4. Seafood: The fresh seafood and even sushi was absolutely delicious

Tips for Traveling in Phuket

  • Getting Around: Tuk-tuks, motorbike taxis, and Grab are popular options, but renting a scooter is the most convenient and cost-effective way to explore. Driving in the city is crazy so I would not recommend it and tbe aware of potential scams.

  • Currency: Thai Baht (฿); most places accept and prefer cash but credit cards are widely used in hotels and larger restaurants.

  • Language: Basic English is spoken in tourist areas, but learning a few Thai phrases can enhance your experience. The people are so nice and kind and make for great hosts

  • What to bring: Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and bring bug spray!

Conclusion

Phuket is a destination that caters to every kind of traveler. Whether you're a back packer looking to stay and party while at hostels or a romantic couple looking for a luxury getaway on the beach, there is truly something for everyone. Enjoy the beautiful beaches, immersing yourself in its vibrant culture, or indulging in luxury experiences, Phuket is a bucket list destination for me and it is worth the long trip to get to! If you are planning an extended trip to Thailand consider a stay first in Phuket so you can unwind at a nice resort and beach after a long flight.
