Everything you need to know before visiting the Phi Phi Islands

The Phi Phi Islands are one of Thailand’s most iconic destinations, offering crystal-clear waters, dramatic limestone cliffs, vibrant marine life, and pristine beaches. The islands are just a short boat ride away from the two larger neighboring islands: Phuket and Krabi. If you are planning a trip to Phuket or Krabi then you are definitely going to want to visit whether for a day trip or an extended stay. Here is my ultimate guide to exploring the breathtaking Phi Phi Islands and everything you need to know before planning your trip!

How to Get to the Phi Phi Islands

The only way to get to the Phi Phi Islands is by boat. If you are planning a multi-day trip to the islands then I would recommend taking the convenient and cheaper Ferry. If you are looking for a day trip excursion you will want to find a day charter that can take you by speedboat first thing in the morning. You will want to beat the crowds by getting there before the Ferry.

  1. From Phuket:

    • Take a ferry from Rassada Pier (approximately 2 hours) or a speedboat (about 45 minutes). Ferries are more affordable, while speedboats are faster and more convenient.

  2. From Krabi:

    • Ferries depart from Klong Jilad Pier, taking around 90 minutes. Speedboats are also available for quicker access.

  3. Island Hopping Tours:

    • Many travelers opt for organized boat tours from Phuket or Krabi, which include stops at popular spots like Maya Bay and Bamboo Island. You can also rent a longtail boat from the main island for visiting the popular spots as well.

If you are coming from a luxury resort on Phuket or Krabi then I would recommend just doing a day trip and leaving all your luggage and belongings at your resort. Use the day to explore the island and all of the beautiful scenic locations.

Best Time to Visit the Phi Phi Islands

The best time to visit is during the dry season (November to April) when the weather is sunny, and the seas are calm. Avoid visiting during the monsoon season (May to October), as heavy rains and rough waters can disrupt travel plans. The boat ride to the islands is long and you do not want to be travelling when the water is rough.

Top Things to Do on the Phi Phi Islands

1. Explore Maya Bay

Famous for its appearance in the movie The Beach, Maya Bay is a must-visit destination with its turquoise waters and white sandy shores. The ocean water and beaches are way nicer here than the neighboring islands. This is a very touristy spot so it is best to come here first thing in the morning. Unfortunately due to the health and protection of the reefs, you can’t swim in the waters here.

2. Snorkeling and Diving

The Phi Phi Islands boast incredible underwater marine life. Popular snorkeling spots include Shark Point, Bamboo Island, and Monkey Beach. Finding a boat operator that is adventurous is ideal as they will be able to bring you to the best spots (even in areas you didn’t think a boat could fit!)

3. Hike to the Phi Phi Viewpoint

Hike to the top and enjoy a panoramic view of the twin bays of Koh Phi Phi Don. The hike is easy and only takes about 20–30 minutes.

4. Visit Viking Cave

Located on Koh Phi Phi Leh, this fascinating cave is known for its ancient wall paintings and as a site for harvesting bird’s nests for soup.

5. Hang out with Monkeys

You will find multiple beaches on the islands with monkeys. They are very docile and are not spooked by the crowd of people around them

Where to Stay on the Phi Phi Islands

If you are planning to spend the night on the Phi Phi Islands then you will want to splurge for their luxury locations as these are still very affordable compared to most other destinations.

  1. Luxury Resorts:

    • Saii Phi Phi Island Village: Private bungalows and luxury villas with beachfront views.

    • Zeavola Resort: A 5-star eco-resort offering barefoot luxury.

  2. Mid-Range Options:

    • Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort: Comfortable accommodations with great views.

    • Bay View Resort: Conveniently located near the ferry pier.

  3. Budget-Friendly Stays:

    • The Cobble Beach: Affordable lodging with a pool.

    • Harmony House: Basic rooms ideal for backpackers.

If you elect to save money at one of the cheaper options just know that some of these places can get a little rowdy with the backpacker / island hopping party crowd.

Tips for Visiting the Phi Phi Islands

  • Plan Early: Popular spots like Maya Bay can get crowded, so arrive early or visit during off-peak hours.

  • Bring Cash: Many smaller shops and restaurants only accept cash, so bring enough Thai baht. You will find that everything on the island is very affordable

  • Pack Light: If staying overnight, pack only essentials, as transportation involves boats and walking on sandy paths.
