Most island resorts in the Maldives require seaplane transfers from the Male airport. If you are booking a flight to the Maldives, it is important to know that you should arrive prior to 3PM as seaplanes stop flying at sunset. You will need to land, get through customs, check in and head to the seaplane airport or marina. Island resorts closer to the capital have access to boat transfers which are not limited to daylight hours. If your resort requires a seaplane be sure to arrive early or plan to spend the night in Male.
Hotels in Male
The luxury villas synonymous with the Maldives are not found on the island of Male. There are not many accommodations and there are not many things to do on the island. The only good thing about spending a night in the capital is you will find a much cheaper rate than you would on a private island. If you aren’t going to spend the full day at a resort, you might as well not pay for a full day at a resort. Remember, depending on your travel plans, you may be severely jet lagged as well!
Hulhule Island Hotel is a great choice for a cheap but nice place to rest your head overnight before heading to your resort or departing the country. The hotel is literally next to the runway and you can walk 2 minutes to the terminal. The hotel is bland but it does have a pool and a little private beach area. This location is perfect for the ultimate convenience.
If you want a nicer option, consider booking Saii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton which is just a short boat transfer to the neighboring island. This is a better hotel if you want to enjoy luxury like the overwater villas etc.
The Saii Lagoon is part of the Hilton Family which means you can book it with Hilton points! Check out my blog for the best way to book Hilton properties on points.
